Evidence-Based Workshops Designed to Educate and Empower

Cancer Support Community provides educational workshops led by experts in their fields, all free of charge. Topics include prevention, the latest in cancer treatment, managing health during and post-treatment, and more.

Classes are open to CSC Participants as well as the general public and offered in person, virtually, and in hybrid formats. Space is limited for in-person sessions. Exploring End-of-Life Disposition Options

What happens after death is a deeply personal decision, yet many people are unaware of the full range of options available today. This informative hybrid workshop will explore six different disposition choices — including traditional burial, cremation, terramation, aquamation, sea burial, and other emerging alternatives. Participants will learn how each option works, how to access these services, typical costs, environmental impacts, and the personal, cultural, and practical reasons families choose different paths. This session offers a clear, compassionate space to ask questions, plan ahead, and make informed decisions aligned with your values. Hybrid format: Attend in person or join via Zoom.

In Conversation with a Death Doula

Join us for an open and informative discussion exploring the role of a death doula and how this unique form of support can help individuals and families navigate end-of-life experiences with greater understanding and care. This educational session will cover what death doulas do, when and why someone might choose to work with one, and how to find and hire a death doula. Through compassionate conversation, participants will gain insight into the emotional, practical, and supportive services death doulas provide, helping to demystify end-of-life care and empower individuals to make informed, meaningful choices.

Work and Cancer

Join us for Work & Cancer, an informative educational workshop designed to help individuals navigate employment during and after a cancer diagnosis. This session will be led by **Susan Yoon, Staff Attorney at Triage Cancer**, who will provide expert guidance on workplace rights, legal protections, and practical considerations for managing work while undergoing treatment or transitioning back to employment. Topics may include reasonable accommodations, medical leave options, disability benefits, health insurance considerations, and how to communicate effectively with employers. This workshop is ideal for patients, survivors, and caregivers seeking clear, reliable information to make informed decisions about work and cancer.

Balance and Mobility

This educational workshop is designed specifically for individuals navigating cancer treatment, survivorship, or recovery, with a focus on improving safety, confidence, and independence in everyday movement. Participants will learn about fall risk awareness, safe mobility strategies, and practical ways to support balance — especially for those experiencing treatment-related fatigue, neuropathy, muscle weakness, or changes in stability. As part of the session, participants will have the opportunity to receive an individual balance screening using the **BTrackS™ Balance Tracking System**, a clinically validated tool used to assess fall risk. Each participant will receive a clear, easy-to-understand report to take home and share with their physician or care team.

Understanding Brain Cancer

Join us for an informative educational workshop with **Dr. Keng Lam**, a neuro-oncologist specializing in the treatment of brain and nervous system tumors. In this session, Dr. Lam will provide an overview of brain cancer, including common diagnoses, treatment approaches, and current advances in care, while offering insight into what patients and families may expect throughout the journey. Dr. Lam brings extensive expertise shaped by training at UC Davis, Kaiser Los Angeles, and MD Anderson. His research on conditions such as gliomas and leptomeningeal disease has been featured in leading medical journals. Known for his compassionate, patient-centered approach, Dr. Lam connects with a diverse community of patients and speaks English, Spanish, Cantonese, and conversational Mandarin. This workshop offers an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Innovative Therapies for Recovery & Prevention

Join us for an informative educational workshop led by Dr. Leif Rogers of CORR Heal Pasadena, exploring innovative wellness therapies designed to support healing, recovery, and overall health. This session will introduce participants to approaches such as red light therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, genetic testing, and cryotherapy, and how these modalities may complement cancer recovery, prevention, and whole-body wellness. Dr. Rogers will discuss the science behind these therapies, potential benefits, and considerations for individuals both during recovery and for those simply looking to optimize their health and longevity. This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about emerging tools that support resilience, healing, and proactive self-care — regardless of current medical condition.

Pelvic Floor Health in Practice

 Build on your understanding of pelvic wellness in *Pelvic Floor Health in Practice*, an educational and experiential workshop focused on strengthening and supporting the pelvic floor. Participants will learn more about how the pelvic floor functions and explore simple, practical strategies and exercises that can be incorporated into everyday life to improve strength, stability, and overall comfort. This session serves as Part 2 of last quarter’s Pelvic Floor Health workshop, while still welcoming newcomers who would like to learn the fundamentals. Whether you attended previously or are joining for the first time, this supportive class offers valuable tools to help you care for your body with confidence and awareness.

The Benefits of Oncology Bodywork

Join us for an educational and interactive Q&A session with Mia Miller, licensed massage therapist, death doula, and owner of Somatic Space. This informational workshop will introduce participants to the role of therapeutic bodywork for oncology patients and survivors, exploring how specialized touch can support comfort, relaxation, and overall well-being throughout and after treatment. This session is designed as a conversation and learning opportunity — no hands-on massage will be provided. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and learn about safety considerations, benefits, and what to expect when seeking oncology-informed bodywork.

End-of-Life Options

Joyce Mayne, Board member and volunteer with End of Life Choices California (EOLCCA) will discuss legal end-of-life options and the resources and support provided by EOLCCA. Legal end-of-life options in California include stopping unwanted medical treatment; palliative care; hospice care; voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED); and California’s End of Life Option Act (also known as medical aid in dying).
